Introduction to the University of Connecticut School of Social Work

Academic Programs

Bachelor of Social Work

The program includes a series of seminar sessions, experiential shadowing, and a senior internship at the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF).

Program Requirements

• Have an interest in child welfare
• Ability to speak Spanish fluently
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 and remain in good academic standing
• Meet UConn and DCF's internship requirements
• Must have a valid driver's license

Program Schedule

• Spring/Summer of Junior Year: Seminar sessions and experiential shadowing
• Fall Semester of Senior Year: Seminar sessions and senior internship
• Spring Semester of Senior Year: Seminar sessions, poster presentation, and senior internship

Student Commitment

• Participate in the program track series of seven sessions
• Complete a senior internship at a CT DCF office
• Apply to the Connecticut Department of Children and Families upon graduation
• Sign a DCF contract agreeing to work for DCF for two years upon successful completion of their degree and hiring process

Stipend/Scholarship

• Students will be awarded a stipend/scholarship of $2,500
• $250 provided mid-fall semester of senior year
• $1,250 at the end of the fall semester of senior year
• $1,000 at the end of the spring semester of senior year

Research and Centers

The University of Connecticut School of Social Work is involved in various research projects and has several centers and institutes that focus on different areas of social work. These include the Center for International Social Work Studies and the Institute for Violence Prevention.
