Program Overview
Program Overview
The Arts Intensive program at Stanford University offers a range of courses designed to provide students with an immersive experience in the arts. The program is tailored to meet the needs of undergraduate students, with a focus on hands-on learning and creative exploration.
Course Description
The Design for Silver and Bronze course is a key component of the Arts Intensive program. This course teaches students fabrication techniques, including piercing saw work in sterling silver, light forming, and soldering. Students will also learn about design constraints and considerations when working with precious metals, with an emphasis on designing projects that incorporate domestically mined materials.
Course Objectives
The course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the techniques and principles involved in designing and creating silver and bronze pieces. Students will learn about the California gold mining industry and design and make a work that reflects their experience.
Meet the Instructors
The course is taught by Amanda Sather and Sara Shaughnessy, both of whom are experienced designers and lecturers in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Stanford University. Amanda and Sara have been teaching the Silversmithing in Design course at Stanford for over 20 years and are co-founders of RedStart Design, LLC.
Amanda Sather
Amanda is a Midwest native and second-generation artist. She earned two degrees from Stanford, a BA in Art History and an MA in Religious Studies, and later pursued a Design MFA. Amanda's design approach is intuitive and fluid, and she relies on her eye and instinct to create sculptural and flowing pieces.
Sara Shaughnessy
Sara grew up with a passion for art and later shifted her focus to mechanical engineering. She earned a BA in Biology and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and later pursued a graduate degree at Stanford. Sara's design approach is adventurous and entrepreneurial, and she is drawn to pattern, precision, and ordered complexity.
