Program Overview

Stanford Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA) Course

The Center for Immersive and Simulation-based Learning (CISL) offers a one-day simulation training course in anesthesia crisis management. As one of ASA’s endorsed programs, our course can be used toward Part 4 (Practice Performance Assessment & Improvement) of Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA).

Our course is delivered by leaders in anesthesia and the field of simulation-based training. It offers hands-on practice of current techniques, diagnosis, and treatment of difficult anesthesia cases, which also covers Crisis Resource Management (CRM) training.

Objectives

  • Develop strategies to apply technical skills to appropriately diagnose and treat anesthesia emergencies.
  • Develop strategies to apply crisis resource management skills during clinical crisis situations.
  • Develop strategies to apply reflective and self-assessment skills to review and analyze clinical performance.

Enrolled participants will experience or observe various clinical scenarios carefully selected to represent common and infrequent critical events in anesthesia practice. Each participant will play the role of the primary anesthesiologist for at least one scenario and observe or serve as a secondary responder for the other scenarios. Each scenario is followed by a group debriefing. Participants will refresh their skills in managing critical incidents, team interactions, and resource utilization.

MOCA Credit Information

American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) MOCA 2.0

The following is based on our current understanding of ABA requirements.

Under the current system of MOCA 2.0, participating in a MOCA Simulation Course at an ASA-endorsed simulation program (including the Stanford Center for Immersive and Simulation-based Learning) will count for significant credit for Part IV of MOCA. Attending the MOCA Course counts for 20 Part IV points; conducting and reporting on a Practice Improvement Plan based on experience in the Course provides an additional 5 points. Currently, 25 points are needed per 5-year period, and simulation may be used to accrue Part IV points in both 5-year portions of the 10-year MOCA cycle.

Accreditation

Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME)

The Stanford University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians and designates this live activity for a maximum of 8.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

The California Board of Registered Nursing recognizes that Continuing Medical Education (CME) is acceptable for meeting RN continuing education requirements as long as the course is certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Nurses will receive a Certificate of Participation following this activity that may be used for license renewal.

Course Fee

The course fee is $2,000, which includes:

  • Tuition

Faculty Instructors

Stanford University boasts a world-renowned faculty who have been pioneers in the field of simulation as a methodology and are all affiliated with the Stanford University School of Medicine. As thought leaders, they have been responsible for much of the work done in the field of anesthesia simulation.

Typically, each MOCA Course has 3 or more instructors from this list:

  • David Gaba, MD
    • Associate Dean for Immersive and Simulation-based Learning
    • Professor, Anesthesiology
    • Course Director
  • Steven Howard, MD
    • Emeritus Professor, Anesthesiology
  • Naola Austin, MD
    • Clinical Associate Professor, Anesthesiology
  • Ruth Fanning, MD
