Program Overview
Introduction to the Triple Board Residency Program
The Stanford Triple Board Residency Program is a unique and comprehensive training program that prepares medical students to become clinicians, scholars, and advocates in the fields of pediatrics, general psychiatry, and child and adolescent psychiatry. This 5-year program is designed to provide residents with a broad range of clinical experiences, didactic seminars, and research opportunities to equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in their future careers.
Program Overview
The Triple Board Residency Program is based on the principles of developmental sciences and developmental psychopathology. This theoretical framework views human development and its disturbances as flowing from the complex and reciprocal interactions between the family, biology, and the broader cultural, social, and physical environments. The program is divided into three main components: pediatrics, general psychiatry, and child and adolescent psychiatry.
Pediatrics Component
The pediatrics component of the program is designed to provide residents with a strong foundation in pediatric care. Residents will spend 2 years in pediatric training, during which they will work on inpatient and outpatient teams, including hematology, oncology, neurology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, nephrology, endocrinology, emergency medicine, and neonatal medicine. They will also participate in a pediatric primary care experience, which includes a half-day per week continuity clinic that continues for all 5 years of the program.
Residency Schedule for Pediatrics
The residency schedule for pediatrics is as follows:
- PGY-1 (12 mos): General Pediatrics Wards (SCVMC) days/SCVMC nights, General Pediatrics Wards (LPCH Blue or Silver Team), Gastroenterology (Green Team Inpatient/Outpatient), Pulmonology (Yellow Team Inpatient/outpatient), PICU, NICU, Well Baby Nursery / Intermediate Care Nursery, Emergency Department (Stanford), Community (with LPCH-Gardner Urgent Care MWF), Night Float (Blue-Yellow Team) / Vacation, Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics, Urgent Care (SCVMC) / Vacation
- PGY-2 (12 mos): Gen peds Wards Senior, Wards Senior, Night Float Supervisor /XC-J, Cardiology (Purple Team Inpatient / Outpatient), Oncology/Oncology NF, NICU / NICU NF, Emergency Department (Valley Children’s Hospital), Community (with LPCH-Gardner Urgent Care MWF), Urgent Care (LPCH-Gardner) / Urgent Care (SCVMC), Primary Care-B / Vacation, Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics, Well Baby Nursery / Vacation, Adolescent Medicine, Elective, Urgent Care (SCVMC) / Vacation
General Psychiatry Component
The general psychiatry component of the program is designed to provide residents with a strong foundation in adult psychiatry. Residents will spend 18 months in general psychiatry training, during which they will work on inpatient and outpatient teams, including emergency psychiatry, neurology outpatient, inpatient psychiatry voluntary/locked units, geropsychiatry inpatient voluntary/locked units, and consult liaison.
PGY-3 Clinical Rotations
The PGY-3 clinical rotations for general psychiatry are as follows:
- 1 Month: Emergency Psychiatry (Stanford), Neurology Outpatient (Stanford), Inpatient Psychiatry Voluntary/Locked Units (Stanford), Geropsychiatry Inpatient Voluntary/Locked Units (Stanford), Consult Liaison (Stanford)
- 1 Month: Outpatient Evaluation Clinic, Pediatric Continuity Clinic, Education (PGY2 Psychiatry Didactics, Dynamic Psychotherapy Group Supervision, Resident Process Group (Optional), Coaching Program, Triple Board Advisory Meetings)
PGY-4 Clinical Rotations
The PGY-4 clinical rotations for general psychiatry are as follows:
- Outpatient Psychiatry: Dynamic Psychotherapy Clinic, Depression / Mood Clinic, Psychiatry Specialty Clinics, College Mental Health Clinic / Community Clinic, Scholarly Concentration / Pediatric Continuity Clinic
- Education: PGY2 Psychiatry Didactics, Dynamic Psychotherapy Group Supervision, Resident Process Group (Optional), Coaching Program
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Component
The child and adolescent psychiatry component of the program is designed to provide residents with a strong foundation in child and adolescent psychiatry. Residents will spend 18 months in child and adolescent psychiatry training, during which they will work on inpatient and outpatient teams, including Mills Adolescent Inpatient Unit, Community-based Pediatric Continuity Clinic, Outpatient Psychotherapy Clinic, and Pediatric Consult-Liaison.
