Program Overview
Introduction to the Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry Program
The Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. Upon successful completion, the program awards a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and the University of Washington Graduate School awards a Master of Science in Dentistry (MSD).
Program Goals
The mission of the University of Washington Advanced Dental Education in Pediatric Dentistry is to train well-rounded pediatric dentists who are empowered to improve the oral health of children and individuals with special health care needs. The program aims to:
- Develop knowledge, proficiency, and competence in providing specialty care as a pediatric dentistry specialist for infants, children through adolescence, and individuals with special health care needs.
- Prepare residents for clinical and academic pediatric dentistry careers.
- Demonstrate critical, independent thinking and understanding of the scientific methodology and experimental design as required of a life-long learner.
- Educate and expose residents to different medical and dental specialties and foster collaboration.
- Demonstrate cultural competence and humanistic patient-centered care.
Program Description
The advanced education in pediatric dentistry program at the University of Washington is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Successful completion of the two-year program (24 months) leads to a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and a Master of Science in Dentistry (MSD). The program encourages all graduates to seek APBD Board Certification upon graduation.
This is a joint Certificate/Master’s degree program. Students must be accepted to the Pediatric Dentistry Program and the Graduate School at the University of Washington. The research component will result in the award of a Master of Science in Dentistry.
The majority of training is carried out in two primary teaching sites: The Center for Pediatric Dentistry and Seattle Children’s Hospital (SCH), which are 2.3 miles apart. SCH is a highly regarded tertiary care pediatric medical center.

The program includes clinical rotations at:
- The Center for Pediatric Dentistry Clinic:
- Continuity clinic for healthy children
- Continuity clinic for children with mild/moderate special healthcare needs
- Daytime emergencies clinic
- Medically Complex Clinic (MCC) & Autism clinic
- Sedation clinic
- Dental surgery center for oral rehabilitation under general anesthesia
- Teaching clinic for undergraduate dental students
- Seattle Children’s Hospital:
- Continuity clinic for children with severe special healthcare needs
- Inpatient consults
- Emergency Department (after-hours dental emergencies)
- Craniofacial team
- Medical subspecialties
- Hospital main operating room for oral rehabilitation under general anesthesia
- Odessa Brown Community Clinic
Admissions Information
Application Prerequisites
To apply, an applicant must:
- Hold a DDS or DMD degree from an accredited college/university in the United States or an equivalent degree from a foreign institution.
- Be eligible for a state dental limited license.
- Pass Part 1 and Part 2 of the National Board exam or the INDBE examination.
- Graduates of non-US and Canadian Dental Schools must be proficient in the English language and meet the requirements described by the University of Washington Graduate School.
- Have a strong academic record with an average of B or better.
Application Process
- The program participates in the PASS (Postdoctoral Application Support Service). The deadline for PASS applications is September 15 preceding matriculation.
- The program also participates in the National Matching Program.
- Applicants are recommended to wait to apply to the University of Washington Graduate School until after the Match (late January).
- Additional materials, including a 2x2 photo, current CV, and waiver statement, must be sent directly to the Department.
Program Stipend and Tuition
Pediatric dentistry residents are considered University of Washington employees and are paid salaries and fringe benefits. The salary levels for the fiscal year are as follows:
- First Year: $76,032.00
- Second Year: $78,660.00
Salaries will increase each year if approved by the University of Washington GME. Graduate students are expected to pay the University of Washington Graduate School tuition for the Master of Science in Dentistry (MSD).
