Program Overview
Graduate Program in Periodontics
The University of Washington School of Dentistry offers a graduate program in Periodontics, which is designed to provide advanced education and training in the field of periodontics.
Admissions
All application materials must be received by ADEA PASS and the Department of Periodontics by August 1, 2025, for consideration in the class beginning Summer Quarter, 2026.
- Applicants must have successfully completed a U.S. or international dental degree (e.g., DDS, DMD, BDS) or be in their final year of dental school in good standing.
- A DMD/DDS degree or equivalent is required, although graduates from non-ADA accredited dental schools may also be considered.
- The Graduate School accepts applications from U.S. citizens, permanent residents (green card holders), immigrants, and international applicants.
- Undocumented individuals are eligible for admission to any graduate program at the University of Washington.
Application Process
The application process involves the following steps:
- PASS Application: Complete an Application for Admission to the Postgraduate Periodontics program online via ADEA PASS.
- Official Dental School Transcripts
- Professional Evaluation Forms (PEFs)
- Official NBDE scores
- Institution Evaluation Form (IEF)
- Unofficial undergraduate transcript
- CV/Resume
- Personal Statement
- Dental School Diploma (required if you have graduated – must be in English or an official translated copy)
- National Matching Program (MATCH): Register with the National Matching Service.
- Materials sent directly to the UW Department of Periodontics:
- 2” x 2” photo
- Departmental application fee of $75 paid via credit card
Required Materials for International Applicants
- Foreign trained dentists do not need to submit National Board scores.
- Applicants that graduated from dental schools outside the U.S. must submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
- A valid official TOEFL score must be submitted from ETS TOEFL to PASS for all applicants whose native language is not English.
- Foreign dental school transcript – requires foreign evaluations from Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) or World Education Services (WES)
- The Advanced Dental Admission Test (ADAT) will be optional for the application cycle in 2025.
Application Processing and Interviews
- Early application is encouraged, as completed applications will be reviewed by members of our selection committee on an ongoing basis.
- If selected, you will be contacted by phone and/or e-mail to arrange for a personal interview, which will occur in mid-August or early October.
- Interviews are required for admission.
- The University of Washington Periodontics Program uses a selective interview process.
Program Acceptance and UW Graduate School Application
- Candidates who match must apply to the UW Graduate School after matching.
- Application to the UW Graduate School (and payment of the Graduate School $85 application fee) is only after the acceptance in the program.
- Every candidate who matches is required to attend our program and must complete a criminal background check.
Tuition/Fees
- Tuition fees are based on credit hours and are subject to change per academic year.
- Clinic fees of $2,000/year or $500 per quarter (subject to change) are in addition to tuition.

Immunization and Health Requirements
- By accepting enrollment into the dental/graduate program, students agree to meet immunization and TB screening requirements in accordance with CDC guidelines for healthcare personnel and as outlined by the Health Sciences Immunization Program.
- This includes a requirement that students be vaccinated against COVID-19.
