Master of Information Program
The Master of Information (MI) program is a professional degree that offers students the opportunity to explore the intersection of information, technology, and society. The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the information field, including the social, cultural, and economic contexts in which information is created, organized, and used.
Program Overview
The MI program is a 8.0 credit program that can be completed in 12-16 months. The program consists of a combination of required and elective courses, as well as a co-op or practicum component.

Co-op Option
The MI program offers a co-op option, which allows students to complete two terms of co-op work and gain professional experience in their relevant field of study. The co-op option is a partnership between students, employers, and the Faculty of Information.
Co-op Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the co-op option, students must:
- Be registered as a full-time student in the Master of Information program
- Enroll and complete INF3901H in the Fall and Winter of the first year
- Be on track to completing 3.5 credits by the end of Year 1 Winter Term
- Be in good academic standing
Co-op Completion Timeline
A typical timeline for students interested in doing 2 terms of Co-op as part of their MI degree requirements is as follows:
- Summer prior to Fall Entry: Declare interest in the Co-op Program
- Year 1 Fall: Full-time Status, Full-time tuition fees, Meet eligibility requirements
- Year 1 Winter: Full-time Status, Full-time tuition fees, Continue to meet eligibility requirements
- Year 1 Summer and Year 2 Fall: Full-time Status, No tuition fees + Co-op placement fee, Co-op term
- Year 2 Winter: Full-time Status, Full-time tuition fees, Return to complete degree requirements
- Year 2 Summer: Full-time Status, No tuition fees, Graduation
Finances
The co-op program has associated fees, including:
- Co-op course fees (INF3901, INF3902, and INF3903)
- Full-time tuition fees for Fall and Winter terms
- Co-op placement fee
International Students
International students interested in the co-op option need to have a valid Co-op work permit to work in their Co-op position(s). The application process for a Co-op work permit can be lengthy, and students are encouraged to begin the process as soon as possible.

- How long are the Co-op roles? The minimum requirement is 12 weeks, 30 hrs/week per co-op term.
- I found my own co-op. What do I do? If you secure a co-op position that was not posted on the Symplicity job board, it must be reviewed and approved by the Co-op Team to ensure it meets the program requirements.
- How many placements are available? Historically, approximately 500+ job postings have been made available each year.
- Where will I complete my Co-op term? The Faculty of Information has established partnerships with organizations in the GTA and beyond. Students can pursue Co-op experiences anywhere in the world.
