The MD/MBA combined degree program is offered by the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and the Rotman School of Management. This program is designed for medical students with leadership potential and an appetite for driving change in the healthcare and life sciences sector.
Program Overview
The MD/MBA program is a five-year combined degree program that allows students to complete the requirements for both the MD and MBA degrees in five years, rather than the six years it would take to acquire the degrees independently. The program is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the complex intersection of medicine and business management, while building their network among Canada's most powerful people and institutions.
Program Structure
The program structure is as follows:
- Year 1: Year 1 MD program
- Year 2: Year 2 MD program
- Year 3: Year 3 MD program; Apply to MD/MBA program
- Year 4: Year 1 MBA
- Year 5: Year 4 MD program; Year 2 MBA
Admissions
To be eligible for the MD/MBA program, students must first be admitted to the Temerty Faculty of Medicine MD program. In the third year of the MD program, students can then apply to Rotman to join the MD/MBA combined degree program.
Admission Requirements
The admission requirements for the MD/MBA program are as follows:
- Strong academic performance
- An appropriate bachelor's degree, or its equivalent, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the final year of a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university
- GMAT or GRE requirement is waived for MD/MBA applicants; MCAT score will be used instead
- Two years of work experience are not required for MD/MBA applicants
- Professional references
- Essay and video interview
- English language proficiency
Fees and Financial Options
A range of scholarships and financial options have been established to help students cover the cost of their studies. When students are accepted to the MD/MBA program, a list of relevant entrance awards and other available funding will be included in their offer letter.

Who Can Apply?
Students currently in the third year of the U of T MD degree can apply for the MD/MBA joint program.
Are Students Enrolled at the Mississauga Academy of Medicine Eligible?
Yes, all University of Toronto MD students are eligible and welcome to apply.
Who Should I Ask to Be a Reference?
If students have relevant professional experience prior to entering medicine, they should ask their direct report to be a reference. If they do not have professional experience, references from their internships or volunteer activities would also be accepted.
What Is the Benefit of Taking an MD/MBA vs the MBA in Residency or Later?
Completing both degrees in five years rather than six, a slightly reduced courseload, and completing the MBA before beginning the residency program are some of the benefits of taking an MD/MBA.
