Program Overview


ISP100 Writing for University and Beyond

What is ISP100?

This course teaches writing- and reading-related skills that are necessary for success in the transition to university work. The course uses a "Writing About Writing" approach to help students understand the writing process. ISP100 is a for-credit course, with a maximum of 25 students per section. The course is interdisciplinary and will benefit students pursuing any program.


Who should take ISP100?

ISP100 is a required course if you plan on pursuing any of the following programs of study:


  • Anthropology (excluding Forensic Science)
  • Astronomy
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Earth Science
  • Mathematical Sciences
  • Physics
  • Political Science
  • Sociology (including Criminology, Law & Society)
  • Statistics
  • Visual Studies (including Art History and Cinema Studies) Students pursuing the above programs are given first priority to enroll. However, students planning to pursue other programs are also welcome to enroll in the course if space permits.

How do I enroll in ISP100?

Students interested in taking ISP100 will be able to enroll in the course through ACORN when course enrolment is available. This course will appear with a status of INTerim until ISUP has reviewed and approved enrolment requests.


Writing Check-In (WCI)

The Writing Check-In (WCI) is a mandatory written assessment designed to assess students' writing skills. It takes place during the first class of the semester and students must achieve a passing grade in order to remain in the course. Attendance during the first class is required. Those who are unsuccessful in the WCI will be removed from ISP100 and encouraged to take ISP010: Basics of Writing in English.
