Fully Online Program – Starting July 2024

The Executive Health Informatics Program is offered fully online. This new online format enables a new segment of students from across Canada, who currently are unable to access the University of Toronto’s MHI program, to attend courses and obtain the critical skills and knowledge provided by the program and desperately needed across the country.

Gain Practice Experience

Students will participate in an informatics project to apply course learning within their own professional settings or to the healthcare sector in general. Students work with the instructor and/or employer to develop a related project prior to onsite or health system execution. The project requires approximately 400 hours of applied practice.

EMHI delivers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary curriculum that provides advanced knowledge in key health informatics competencies. Students will build their expertise in:

  • Health and clinical systems and policy
  • Health information processing

Program Structure

  • EMHI students are paired with a mentor to guide them through their experiential project, provide career guidance, and expand their network.
  • Later career individuals will be paired with an IHPME Senior Fellow who has extensive and progressive experience in the healthcare sector to provide 1-on-1 coaching, mentoring, and network enhancement.
  • EMHI students are expected to come to Toronto twice for a residential component to accommodate courses which are better taught in-person.
  • The residential component is held in February of each year to synergize with the annual Future of Health Leadership, Informatics, and Policy (FHLIP) conference, which enables networking with multiple cohorts, presentation of EMHI projects, and networking with policy players in Ontario.
  • Students are expected to submit their project work to the FHLIP conference. Papers are peer-reviewed, and if accepted, are published in a conference proceedings which is indexed in Medline. Students get the opportunity to network with key policy leaders, stakeholders, and patients in an intimate setting to advance their project work.
