Program Overview
The UC San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences (SSPPS) offers a PGY1 Community Pharmacy Residency Program. This one-year, postgraduate training program aims to develop community-based pharmacist practitioners with diverse patient care, leadership, and education skills.
Program Purpose
The purpose of this program is to build upon the doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop community-based pharmacist practitioners who are eligible to pursue advanced training opportunities, including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies and professional certifications.
Program Competencies
The required educational competencies for PGY1 Community Pharmacy Practice Residencies include:
- Patient care
- Leadership and management
- Advancement of community-based practice and improving patient care
- Teaching, education, and dissemination of knowledge
Core Requirements for Residency Completion
To complete the residency, participants must:
- Obtain a California Board of Pharmacy Intern License by July 1st
- Obtain a California Board of Pharmacy Pharmacist License within 120 days of the program start date
- Successfully complete required rotations and learning objectives
- Complete all required evaluations
- Complete a teaching certificate via the San Diego Pharmacy Residency Leadership Program
- Complete a residency project with a presentation at a professional meeting
- Prepare the residency project in manuscript format

Elective learning experiences include:
- Transitions of Care
- Population Health
- General Psychiatric Clinic
Teaching Certificate
The resident will participate in a teaching certificate program, which includes a seminar series attended with residents from other county-wide residency programs. The resident will have opportunities to develop precepting and teaching skills for various levels of pharmacy students.
Residency Project
The resident will design and complete one major project during the academic year, which may be a medication-use evaluation (MUE), a continuous quality improvement (CQI) project, or another type of research project. The project will be presented at professional meetings, and support will be given to help the resident develop a manuscript suitable for publication by the end of the residency year.

The example schedule outlines the program's timeline, including:
- Orientation and onboarding
- July to September: Clinical Service Development, Operations, ownership, and patient care
- October to March: Ambulatory Care Clinics, Operations, ownership, and patient care
- April to June: Clinical Service Development, Elective experiences
