Program Overview
Program Overview
The Neuroscience MS Program at Penn State College of Medicine brings together scientists from different basic and clinical disciplines to focus on the nervous system. Some researchers seek to clarify the development or function of the brain at the cellular, molecular, or genetic levels. Others seek to understand how the nervous system processes information, controls autonomic functions, regulates states of consciousness, or determines behavior. Still, others search for the means to diagnose, prevent, and successfully treat malignant brain tumors, congenital and acquired brain diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, or dysfunctions caused by pathologic states in brain structure. All are committed to educate graduate students in the neurosciences in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Program Details
The interdepartmental structure of the Neuroscience MS program provides students with the flexibility to take multidisciplinary approaches to research problems in neuroscience, and collaborations among laboratories are strongly encouraged. Research programs are well-supported by grants from private and public funds, particularly from the National Institutes of Health. Penn State College of Medicine provides a collegial environment that promotes research and learning.
First Year
During the first year, students participate in foundation coursework focused on neuroscience. They also rotate in one or more labs with the aim of finding a Master’s thesis research project.
Second Year
In the second year, the student will focus on thesis research while taking more advanced classes and electives.
Completion of Requirements
Completion of the requirements for a MS in Neuroscience entails the preparation of a written thesis and formal acceptance of the thesis by the student’s master’s committee.
Tuition and Financial Support
Students in the Neuroscience MS program pay the standard Penn State University graduate student tuition. Financial aid is generally not offered for a master's degree student.
Other Fees
Students are responsible for the costs of books (approx. $400 per year), activity fees, thesis fees, and medical insurance, which is required for all students.
Student Support
Dedicated offices support your health and well-being, while services such as a health sciences library assist in your learning journey. We are committed to enhancing students' experience and development.
