Program Overview


Introduction to the International Master of Public Health (IMPH) Program

The International Master of Public Health (IMPH) Program is a graduate-level, interdisciplinary, and cross-cultural degree program offered by the Vanke School of Public Health, Tsinghua University. The program aims to build a new generation of global public health leaders in the developing world through the participation of recognized faculty and expertise from across Tsinghua University and partners around the world.


Program Overview

The IMPH Program is specifically designed for public health officials, disease prevention and control specialists, and health program managers from developing and developed countries. The fundamental purpose of the program is to improve health conditions and achieve health equity in developing countries. The program prepares students to address global health challenges and issues of health service delivery, health product accessibility, and global health policy.


Program Objectives

The program has four specific objectives:


  1. To develop students' capability in applying theories and analytical tools of the public health discipline.
  2. To enhance their understanding of public health issues in China and the rest of the world.
  3. To improve their ability to judge major health problems and leadership skills in solving these problems.
  4. To promote the expanded role of China in improving global public health by fostering a close relationship and cooperative network between faculty and students.

Program Duration

The IMPH Program is a one-year, full-time graduate program, where students finish compulsory courses, selective courses, field studies, and thesis writing.


Course Design and Credit Requirements

The full-time Master's Course is broken down into four parts:

  • Healthcare Management | 3 credits
  • Epidemiology | 3 credits
  • Health Communication | 3 credits
  1. Selective Courses (10 credits)
  • Health Economy and Policy | 3 credits
  • Public Health Statistics | 3 credits
  • Health Nutrition | 2 credits
  • Environmental Health Issues from a Global Perspective | 2 credits
  1. Chinese Culture and Language Courses (4 credits)
  • New Horizon in Chinese Philosophy | 2 credits
  • Elementary Chinese | 2 credits
  1. Field Study and Thesis Writing (6 credits)
  • Public Health Practice | 3 credits
  • Thesis Writing and Presentation | 1 credit

Qualifications

Applicants should be:


  • Government health officials
  • Professionals in the field of disease control and prevention
  • Managers of medical service organizations
  • In good health and of good character
  • Willing to abide by China's laws and regulations, as well as Tsinghua's rules
  • Meet the physical examination requirements stipulated by the country and THU
  • Have the equivalent of a bachelor's degree in Chinese universities
  • Have at least three years of full-time working experience in public health or relevant areas
  • Have good English language proficiency, able to follow English-taught courses well
  • Not over 45 years old to the date September 1, 2023

The IMPH program is fully supported by the Youth of Excellence Scheme of China Program Chinese Government Scholarship.


Evaluation and Admission

THU admits students based on evaluation of their application documents together with a comprehensive assessment. The application materials are reviewed by an expert group from Vanke School of Public Health, and the candidates for the comprehensive assessment will be selected based on the review results. The comprehensive assessment is generally based on interviews. The specific content, format, requirements, and time arrangements are determined by Vanke School of Public Health and will be notified to applicants who enter the comprehensive assessment.
