Continuing Education Certificate Programs

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Hybrid program is a comprehensive training approved by the New York State Education Department. This program equips students with the knowledge and skills to excel in diverse healthcare settings, from hospitals and hospice facilities to home health agencies. CNAs work directly with patients and their families, providing quality patient care, with duties ranging from feeding to taking vital signs.


Program Details

  • The program covers Anatomy/Physiology and Fundamentals of Patient Care, providing a foundation for CNA training.
  • Upon successful completion, students are guided through scheduling their NYS CNA certification exam, which is included in the program.
  • Additional attempts at the certification exam require a testing fee.

Courses

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Course 1: Covers Anatomy/Physiology and Fundamentals of Patient Care, providing the foundation for CNA training.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Course 2: Builds upon the foundation set in Course 1, delving deeper into advanced patient care practices and preparing students for the application of their skills through an in-person off-site clinical rotation.

Program Structure

  • Didactic instruction is provided online, typically two nights per week.
  • Skills instruction is provided in-person at CUNY on the Concourse.
  • Clinicals are typically four days, 8 am-4 pm, during the week or on weekends.
  • Tuition includes instruction, exam voucher, in-person off-site clinical, and medical testing/immunizations for clinical rotations, but does not include books, uniform, or registration fees.

Prerequisites

  • High School diploma or equivalency.
  • Demonstrate fluency in English; a reading test may be given.
  • Required Medical Forms are due on the first day of class.
  • Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination and Booster are required.
  • CPR 100: CPR for Health Care Providers or current American Heart Association certification is required before clinical rotation.
  • Valid government ID for testing.
  • Basic computer skills are required for online learning.

Program Certification

Satisfactory completion of Course 1 and Course 2, plus CPR certification proof, is required to be eligible to take the New York State (NYS) credentialing exam.


Curriculum Components

  • Anatomy/Physiology and Fundamentals of Patient Care: Master the inner workings of the human body through in-depth anatomy and physiology studies. Gain proficiency in essential patient care skills. (97 hours, including orientation, didactic, and skills instruction.)
  • Clinical for CNAs: Supervised clinical rotations where theory is put into practice, providing hands-on care to patients under the guidance of RNs. (30 hours.)
  • CPR: Basic Life Support (BLS) with AED (hybrid): Meets the requirements for National Certification for CPR from the American Heart Association (AHA), teaching lifesaving techniques and introducing Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use.

Financial Assistance

  • ASSET Scholarship: Covers 50% of tuition for the program. Applicants must attend an INFO SESSION for the Adult Student Success in Educational Transition Scholarship (ASSET) or another current semester info session or Career Open House.
  • The program is qualified for Workforce1 ITG Vouchers, providing funding for occupational skills training that leads to employment in New York City high-demand occupations.
