Overview
The Hybrid Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) program at the City College of New York (CCNY) is designed to prepare students for a critical role in the healthcare industry. This 320-hour online/hybrid training program equips students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to excel as a medical assistant and sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant exam.
Course Description
The program is divided into two components: Administrative and Clinical. Students must successfully complete both sections to graduate. A foundational understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology is beneficial, and introductory instruction may be provided as part of the course.
Course Outline
- Medical Terminology/Anatomy and Physiology (30 hours): This course presents a study of basic medical terminology, including prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining forms, special endings, plural forms, abbreviations, and symbols.
- The Clinical Medical Assistant (160 hours): This course covers the role and function of the professional in the clinical laboratory, including Electrocardiogram, Phlebotomy, and Clinical Procedures.
- Medical Assisting: General Discipline and Office Administration (90 hours): This course focuses on the basic concepts of professional practice of medicine and the scope of practice of the medical assistant.
- Electronic Health Record/EHR (30 hours): This course concentrates on maintaining integrity and protecting the privacy and security of patient information when using an electronic healthcare software program.
- Professional Training and Assistance (10 hours): Job readiness workshops and test preparation sessions aim to prepare MA students for expected work in the medical field.

Students will purchase their own books and subscriptions, including:

Eligibility Requirements
To enroll, applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Hold a high school diploma or equivalent
- Be able to work legally in the U.S.
Required Language and Computer Competency
- English Language Proficiency: Students must be able to communicate effectively in English and demonstrate the ability to understand and follow both written materials and live lectures presented in English.
- Computer and Digital Competency: Students must possess basic computer literacy and be comfortable using various digital tools and platforms.
Career Outlook
According to the US Department of Labor outlook handbook, the employment of medical assistants is expected to grow 23 percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. MA job postings increased at least 9% each year.
