Program Overview


Overview of the Healthcare Policy and Management Program

The Healthcare Policy and Management program is designed to accommodate students with diverse interests in healthcare, supporting their entry from various backgrounds, including high school, associate-level degrees, and career paths transferrable to healthcare operations. This program prepares students with minimal or no healthcare experience to enter a robust labor market in healthcare planning, operations policy, and management, as well as to pursue related graduate studies.

Learning Outcomes

The program aims to equip students with the following abilities:


  1. Analyze policies, economic trends, and determinants of health to strategically plan health services delivery.
  2. Plan and organize resources essential for the efficient operation and the equitable delivery of health services.
  3. Develop healthcare financial management plans applicable to the healthcare business setting.
  4. Use industry-standard health technology applications for managing administrative and clinical information.
  5. Apply computational methods to analyze and improve processes in healthcare organizations and systems.
  6. Integrate policy, management, and finance in applied administrative settings.

Articulation Agreements

The program has an articulation agreement with the AS in Public Health from BMCC and an option to earn a graduate degree from CUNY School of Public Health with one additional year of full-time study. City Tech students enrolled in the BS in Healthcare Policy and Management program can take graduate-level courses during their junior and senior years, which count towards both their undergraduate and graduate degrees.


Distance Learning Information

The BS in Healthcare Policy and Management has been approved to be offered as a fully online program. However, it does not accept international students needing an F-1 visa due to the requirement that students maintain their full-time status and do not take more than 3 credits online each semester.


Requirements

General Education

  • Completion requirement
  • Required Common Core:
    • English Composition
    • Mathematical and Quantitative Reasoning
    • Life and Physical Sciences
  • Flexible Common Core: at least one course in each of the five flexible core areas and an additional sixth course in one of them.

College Option

  • All baccalaureate students must complete the following 12 credits:
    • One course in speech/oral communication
    • One interdisciplinary course
    • Two additional liberal arts courses or, in BTech programs, additional liberal arts credits to reach a minimum total of 42 credits in general education.

Writing Intensive

  • Students must complete two courses designated writing intensive (WI) for the associate level and two additional courses designated WI for the baccalaureate level.

Progression and Graduation Requirements

  • Maintain an overall 2.0 GPA.
  • Receive a minimum grade of “C” in each core upper-level course designated with the prefix HSCI or HSA.
  • No HSCI or HSA upper-level course may be repeated more than once.
