Maritime Technology Program

The Maritime Technology AAS degree aligns with the needs of employers in the maritime industry to prepare students for positions within the field. The curriculum provides students with hands-on experiences through labs and aboard boats as well as providing traditional classroom experiences.

Program Details

• Technical training includes courses in oceanography, seamanship, navigation, marine electronics, ship handling, sailing, marina operations, vessel repair, fiber-glassing, welding, diesel and outboard engines, safety and survival, first aid, CPR, firefighting, and STCW certification.
• As a U.S. Coast Guard approved program, graduates earn 225 days of sea-time applicable toward a Captains license or United States Merchant Marine Officers license.
• The program is a sixty college credit program (two years) that earns students an Associate in Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.) in Maritime Technology from Kingsborough Community College (KCC), a unit of the City University of New York.
• Training is 50% “hands-on” in labs and on boats and 50% classroom.

Career Opportunities

• Graduates are employed in New York Harbor as Captains, mates or deckhands aboard ferries, dinner boats, tug boats, and private yachts.
• Graduates are employed ashore as marina managers and in vessel repair service and sales.
• Many graduates use sixty credits to satisfy requirements for entry into NYC Police and Fire Departments and work as NYC Police and Fire Officers both on NYC Police and Fire boats and on land.

Program Structure

• Most students work during summer between first and second year in Maritime internships.
• Thirty credits transferable to senior (4-year) colleges.
• Many classes are conducted aboard college’s training vessels and in campus marina.
