Introduction to the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program

The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Hospital offers a comprehensive Critical Care Medicine fellowship program. This program is designed to provide fellows with the most effective, current, and timely care possible to critically ill patient populations, with a focus on compassionate care that considers both the patient and their family.

The mission of the Critical Care Medicine fellowship program is to provide high-quality care to critically ill patients, while also fostering academic excellence, clinical competence, and professional growth in the subspecialty of critical care medicine. The program strives to create a supportive learning environment that promotes the development of skilled and compassionate critical care physicians.


Program Director’s Welcome

The University of Miami/Jackson Health System Critical Care Medicine (Anesthesiology) Fellowship is a clinically oriented program that offers one and two-year fellowships. The program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and takes a multidisciplinary approach to critical care training. Faculty and attending physicians in several nationally recognized teaching hospitals, including Jackson Memorial Hospital and UHealth Tower of the University of Miami Health System, are dedicated to providing fellows with a comprehensive and well-rounded education in critical care medicine.

Clinical Experience

The Critical Care Medicine (Anesthesiology) Fellowship Program provides fellows with an extensive array of resources, including experienced clinicians, state-of-the-art equipment, and advanced pharmacotherapy. Fellows are encouraged to solve diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas and are evaluated on their ability to provide compassionate care to critically ill patients. Clinical experience includes working in intensive care units such as:


  • Cardiothoracic ICU
  • Neuroscience ICU
  • Medical ICU
  • Surgical ICU
  • Trauma ICU Multi-disciplinary training includes elective opportunities in specialties such as:
  • Radiology
  • Transfusion Medicine
  • Nephrology
  • Infectious Disease Fellows also receive focused teaching in bedside point-of-care echocardiography and have the opportunity to train in comprehensive transesophageal echocardiogram.

Program Curriculum

The Critical Care fellowship program provides fellows with a comprehensive curriculum that includes:


  • Weekly lectures or presentations in core critical care topics
  • Journal club
  • Quality and patient safety
  • Morbidity & mortality
  • Weekly departmental grand rounds covering both anesthesia and critical care topics Fellows are required to participate in scholarly activities such as research projects, abstracts, or other published work with individual mentoring from faculty members.

Requirements

  • Candidates must be eligible to sit for the American Board of Anesthesiology exam
  • Completion of an accredited U.S. residency program
  • Required documentation includes:
    • CV with picture
    • Personal Statement
    • USMLE scores
    • ITE scores
    • ECFMG certificate (if foreign graduate)
    • Three letters of recommendation (including one from current program director)
    • Dean’s letter
    • Medical School transcript
    • Copy of Internship/Residency Certificate
    • Letter indicating proof of training (final competency-based evaluation preferred)
