Program Overview
Introduction to the BS/MSMF Program
The Department of Mathematics at the University of Miami offers a five-year Bachelor of Science in Mathematics / Master of Science in Mathematical Finance (BS/MS) degree program. This program is designed for currently enrolled math majors to acquire a BS/MS degree in five years, rather than the standard 4 plus 1.5 years it normally requires.
Purpose of the Program
The purpose of the BS/MSMF program is to provide students with a comprehensive education in mathematics and mathematical finance, preparing them for careers in quantitative finance. The MS degree is considered the first professional degree for practitioners of quantitative finance ("quants").
Requirements for Admission
To be eligible for the program, students must:
- Be an undergraduate student in the College of Arts and Sciences majoring in Mathematics (Probability and Statistics Track)
- Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 at the time of application
- Discuss the program and the possibility of entering with their assigned academic advisor
- Submit applications during their junior year
- Be admitted to the program prior to academic advising for their senior year
Application Process
The application process requires:
- Providing all required documentation outlined on the online application
- Submitting 2 recommenders
- Sending a UM transcript directly from the UM Office of the Registrar
- Sending official GRE test scores directly from ETS, the testing agency
- An admission decision will not be made until all required application materials have been received and processed for review by the Admission Committee
Financial Implications
Many financial aid programs, including those offered by the University, federal and state governments, are restricted to the coursework required to complete an undergraduate degree. However, the college awards a limited number of competitive MS scholarships worth up to 30% of tuition costs that can be applied toward the 5th year once students are full-time graduate students.
