Program Overview

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN SUSTAINABILITY MANAGEMENT

The Sustainability Management curriculum prepares students for careers in the dynamic and rapidly changing field of sustainability. The curriculum emphasizes the practical skills and core knowledge that practitioners need to face both the known challenges of the present, as well as the unforeseen challenges of the future. The M.S. in Sustainability Management requires the successful completion of 36 credits divided among five comprehensive content areas.

CURRICULUM

The curriculum is divided into five areas:


  • Area 1: Integrative Sustainability Management (9 credits)
  • Area 2: Economics and Quantitative Analysis (6 credits)
    • 3 Economics
    • 3 Quantitative Analysis
  • Area 3: The Physical Dimensions of Sustainability (9 credits)
  • Area 4: The Public Policy Environment of Sustainability Management (3 credits)
  • Area 5: General and Financial Management (6 credits)
  • Elective (3 credits)
    • Any SUMA course (except PS4100 and PS5200)
    • Any pre-approved course available for SUMA
    • SUMA PS5995 Internship in SUMA (required course if you're an F-1 student who completed two terms of full-time enrollment and secured an internship with a US organization - interning is not required for the program)

The M.S. in Sustainability Management program allows students to take classes across Columbia’s graduate schools, including the School of International and Public Affairs, the Mailman School of Public Health, Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Columbia Business School, Columbia Law School, the Graduate School of Arts and Science, and the Fu Foundation Graduate School of Engineering.
