Program Overview

Introduction to the Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling

The Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling. The program enrolls 20 students per year and is 18 months long, with students graduating in mid-March.

Program Structure

  • The program is structured into six 10-week quarters, with three academic quarters in the first year (fall, winter, spring), one summer quarter, and two academic quarters in the second year (fall, winter).
  • Students begin their fieldwork rotations during the spring quarter of their first year, allowing them to apply and reinforce concepts learned in the classroom.

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to emphasize both the scientific and medical aspects of the profession and the counseling and psychosocial aspects. Key components include:

  • Competencies: Defining mastery of the field for graduates.
  • Coursework: Didactic learning.
  • Fieldwork Rotations: A wide variety of opportunities.
  • Thesis Project: Requiring a written thesis and oral defense.
  • Supplemental Activities: Conferences, field trips, and other activities that round out the curriculum.

Program Benefits

The early graduation date in mid-March provides students with a jump-start on the job search and a competitive edge over other graduates. The program's strong research component, including a written thesis and oral defense, further enhances students' career prospects.
