Interdisciplinary Biological Sciences Graduate Program

The Interdisciplinary Biological Sciences (IBiS) program is a graduate program that offers a Ph.D. degree in Biological Sciences. The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in biological sciences, with a focus on interdisciplinary research and collaboration.


Application Process

The application process for the IBiS program involves several steps:


  • Complete the online application via The Graduate School and select "IBiS- Biological Sciences: PHD (B15PH)".
  • Submit the following supporting documentation as part of the online application:
    • Academic Statement (500-1,000 words): Applicants should communicate their motivations for pursuing graduate studies, their career goals, and how they have prepared to reach their goals.
    • Personal Statement (125-250 words): The Graduate School values varied backgrounds, approaches, and perspectives, understanding them as essential ingredients for true academic excellence.
    • Transcripts: A scanned copy of the official transcript from each post-secondary institution attended is required.
    • Resume or Curriculum Vitae: A good resume will summarize education, research experience, and technical skills.
    • Research Statement (1-2 pages): Applicants should communicate a clear understanding of their scientific experiences.
    • Three Letters of Recommendation: Letters of recommendation should be from advisors/professors who are familiar with the applicant's work and achievements.
    • International Applicants: International applicants whose native language is not English must certify their proficiency in English by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Application Timeline

  • Applications to the IBiS program for entry in Fall 2026 should be submitted online to The Graduate School by December 1, 2025, for consideration for full financial support (tuition, stipend, and health insurance).
  • Applications will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee in December and January.
  • Selected applicants will be invited to participate in interviews in late January and early February.
  • Top applicants will then be invited to attend an in-person visit in March.
  • Admissions decisions are finalized and offers are made soon after the interviews.

Admission Criteria

  • Complete applications will be considered for review by the admissions committee.
  • The application fee is $95.00, and a fee waiver will be provided by The Graduate School on a first-come, first-served basis for eligible applicants.
  • GRE scores are not required for the IBiS program.
  • International applicants must certify their proficiency in English by taking the TOEFL, with a minimum score of 90 on the internet-based exam, or the IELTS, with a minimum score of 7.0, or the MET, with a minimum score of 61.
