Program Overview

English Foundation Program Overview

The English Foundation Program (EFP) is designed to help students develop their English language skills and prepare for university studies. The program combines English for academic purposes (EAP) classes, labs, tutorials, and other supports with a wide range of first-year course options.

Program Goals

The goal of the EFP is to help students live well in a new place, develop their English language skills, critical thinking ability, general knowledge, learning strategies, and intercultural competence. Student wellbeing, community engagement, and local First Peoples knowledge are also important parts of the program.

Curriculum

Depending on English language proficiency scores, students will benefit from either one or two terms in the EFP. Students studying one term in the program will complete EAP 104, while students studying two terms will complete EAP 103 and EAP 104. Each term consists of programming designed to maximize English language skills and foster academic success.

Course Structure

A typical week includes:

  • Reading, writing, listening, and speaking classes
  • Campus, community, and culture lessons
  • Language labs and field trips
  • Tutorial support Students can also take one or two additional undergraduate courses to get a head start on their degree program. EAP courses are worth three credits each, and those credits count towards their undergraduate degree as electives.

Admission Requirements

The EFP welcomes students who still need to achieve UBC's minimum English Language Admission Standard (ELAS). If a student applies to study in an undergraduate program on UBC's Okanagan campus and hasn't met the ELAS, they will be evaluated to see if the EFP is the best option for them.

Tuition and Program Fees

Participating in these types of events helps improve English skills, make new friends, and feel connected to the campus and local community.

Student Resources

The EFP Student Resource webpage has important information and resources to set students up for success in their university studies. This includes a full list of additional undergraduate course options that can be taken while pursuing their degree.
