Overview
The Graduate Certificate in Adult Learning and Education (GCALE) is designed to meet the continuing professional development needs of those involved in the broad field of adult learning and education. This program is ideal for individuals responsible for providing adult learning opportunities in various settings, such as workplaces, unions, professional organizations, communities, advocacy groups, non-profit societies, or businesses.
What makes the program unique?
The Certificate program provides participants with enhanced knowledge and skills of the principles, practices, histories, and philosophies of adult learning and education. One of the unique features of this program is the possibility to transfer the 12 ALE Certificate credits into the regular ALE Master's Program, for both M.Ed. and M.A. degrees.
Program Structure
Students must complete 12 credits, including the three MEd core courses listed below and one elective:
- EDST 503 (3) Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Adult Learning and Education
- EDST 514 (3) Adult Education Program Planning Theory
- EDST 518 (3) Theory and Research on Adult Learning
- Approved 3 credit elective

Minimum Academic Requirements
The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies establishes the minimum admission requirements common to all applicants, usually a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC). Each program may set higher academic minimum requirements.
English Language Test
Applicants from a university outside Canada in which English is not the primary language of instruction must provide results of an English language proficiency examination as part of their application. The minimum requirements for the two most common English language proficiency tests are:
- TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language - internet-based
- Overall score requirement: 90
- Reading: 22
- Writing: 21
- Speaking: 21
- Listening: 22
- IELTS: International English Language Testing System
- Overall score requirement: 6.5

Prior degree, course and other requirements
Prior Degree Requirements
It is not a requirement that an applicant's undergraduate degree be in education. However, some experience (1–2 years), be it paid or voluntary, with designing, organizing, administering programs for adult learners is required.
