Graduate Student Fees
In addition to tuition, UBC graduate students are also assessed mandatory student fees, which include:
- An Athletics and Recreation Fee
- A public transit pass (U-Pass) fee
- Membership fees for the Graduate Student Society (GSS) and the Alma Mater Society (AMS) You will also be charged for mandatory extended health and dental insurance coverage unless you can demonstrate that you already have equivalent coverage.
Non-refundable Acceptance Deposit
A non-refundable acceptance deposit of $1,000 is payable upon notification of acceptance into the MUFL program. The acceptance deposit is credited towards the first tuition installment. If the student does not commence the program, the deposit is forfeited.
Funding Opportunities
Needs-based Funding
In-depth information about needs-based funding, such as loans, bursaries, and other types of financial aid, is available from the UBC Student Services office. MUFL students may apply for UBC bursaries, but must be in receipt of full Canadian Government student loan funding and have “unmet need” after their loan funding as determined in their loan assessment. UBC bursaries are non-repayable awards designed to help fill unmet need, the gap between your assessed financial need and available government assistance.
Binkley Family Graduate Scholarship
Four scholarships totaling approximately $11,000 are available each year to outstanding graduate students in the Faculty of Forestry enrolled in one of the Faculty’s Professional Master’s degree programs (MIF, MSFM, MGEM, MUFL). A scholarship is awarded to one student in each program with high academic standing (minimum 85% overall average at the end of the Fall Term) and also demonstrating exceptional engagement and leadership within their cohort.
Course-based Master’s Graduate Student Professional Development Fund
The Course-based Master’s (CBM) Graduate Student Professional Development Fund provides funding support for students enrolled in MF, MIF, MGEM, MSFM, or MUFL programs to participate in person or virtual professional development (workshop, course, or conference) directly related to their area of study. It cannot be used toward internship expenses or student workshops. CBM graduate students are eligible to use the fund once during their degree (one activity) to a maximum of $600 per student. Funding is limited each year and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to eligible applicants.
Indigenous Graduate Fellowship
The University of British Columbia offers multi-year fellowships to master and doctoral Indigenous students. Award winners are selected on the basis of academic merit through an annual competition administered by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Each fellowship provides a stipend of $18,200 per year for doctoral students or a stipend of $16,175 per year for Master’s students. Please note that the Indigenous Graduate Fellowship was known as the Aboriginal Graduate Fellowship until 2023.
