Tuition and Funding
Tuition
Tuition is $21,020.97 CAD per year for domestic students, divided into three installments payable at the beginning of each term. For international students, tuition is $43,166.04 CAD per year, also divided into three installments.
Graduate Student Fees
In addition to tuition, UBC graduate students are assessed mandatory student fees, including an Athletics and Recreation Fee, a public transit pass (U-Pass) fee, and membership fees for the Graduate Student Society (GSS) and the Alma Mater Society (AMS). Students are also charged for mandatory extended health and dental insurance coverage unless they can demonstrate equivalent coverage.
Non-refundable Acceptance Deposit
A non-refundable acceptance deposit of $1,000 is payable upon notification of acceptance into the MIF program. This deposit is credited towards the first tuition installment and is forfeited if the student does not commence the program.
Other Expenses
Students should budget $2,000-$3,000 CAD or more for travel expenses associated with their internship or directed study, depending on the location.
Funding Opportunities
MIF Placement Awards
Up to 10 Placement Awards valued at $1,000 each are available to MIF students. Allocation is based on potential travel costs, placement length, relevance to forest policy, and grades obtained in MIF coursework.
Mastercard Foundation Scholarships
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is a 10-year global initiative to educate and develop next-generation leaders. Scholars receive comprehensive support, including learning opportunities that equip them with knowledge, skills, and values needed to succeed in the economy and make positive impacts in their communities.
Needs-based Funding
In-depth information about needs-based funding, such as loans, bursaries, and other types of financial aid, is available. MIF students may apply for UBC bursaries but must be in receipt of full Canadian Government student loan funding and have "unmet need" after their loan funding.
Binkley Family Graduate Scholarship
Four scholarships totaling approximately $11,000 are available each year to outstanding graduate students in the Faculty of Forestry enrolled in one of the Faculty's Professional Master's degree programs.
Course-based Master’s Graduate Student Professional Development Fund
This fund provides funding support for students to participate in professional development activities directly related to their area of study.
Forestry Indigenous Grad Student Entrance Scholarship
The Faculty of Forestry makes available annual funds for two scholarships, up to $10,000 each, for Indigenous students entering any of UBC Forestry's Master's programs or PhD program.
Indigenous Graduate Fellowship
The University of British Columbia offers multi-year fellowships to Master's and doctoral Indigenous students. Each fellowship provides a stipend of $18,200 per year for doctoral students or $16,175 per year for Master's students.
