Master of International Forestry Program Details

The Master of International Forestry (MIF) program is a 12-month, full-time course-based program consisting of 31 credits. The program is intensive and requires full-time attendance at the UBC-Vancouver campus for 8 months (September to April).

Program Structure

• The program includes:
  • 28 credits of required courses (or approved alternates)
  • A set of professional development skills workshops
  • A 3-credit directed study, placement, or project
• The program will be completed in 12 months, with courses running from September to April, and directed studies, placements, or projects completed between May and August.

FRST 519: Forests and Society

Explores social-ecological factors constraining the conservation of forests and protected areas, with a focus on tropical landscapes and livelihoods.

FRST 522: Social, Community and Indigenous Forestry

Introduces the history and evolution of social, community, and Indigenous forestry, with a focus on community forestry case studies and good governance.

FRST 543: International Forestry Institutions, Diplomacy and Negotiations

Examines contemporary forestry issues, international diplomacy, and negotiating international agreements and conventions related to forests.

FCOR 511: Working with Diverse Knowledge Systems

Enhances awareness of diverse knowledge systems and their implications for decision-making and policy in sustainable natural resources management.

FRST 534: Natural Resource Economics and Environmental Finance

Applies basic economic principles to forest-based goods and environmental services, with a focus on cutting-edge environmental finance topics.

FRST 560: Forest Business Enterprise

Provides a thorough understanding of forest-based businesses and business processes, with a focus on management, financial, and marketing management.

FRST 553: International Forest Governance and Policy

Explores the interconnected nature of political, social, and economic systems as they relate to natural resources, with a focus on recent developments in forest governance.

FRST 559: Natural Resources Planning

Takes an integrated landscape approach to natural resources planning, with a focus on managing forestry, agriculture, and livelihoods in an integrated fashion.

FCOR 510: Professional Communication

Provides applied opportunities for students to engage in and hone their cross-boundary communication skills, with a focus on speaking to diverse audiences.

FRST 562: Topics in International Forestry

Presents contemporary and emerging topics relevant to international forestry, with a focus on panel presentations, lectures, and professional development seminars.

FRST 526: Placement or Directed Study Project

Provides students with the opportunity to secure and complete a placement, directed study, or project aligned with their career goals and aspirations.
