Program Overview


Introduction to the Orthodontic Module

The Orthodontic Module is an advanced training program in orthodontics designed for Certified Dental Assistants and Dental Hygienists. This program enables participants to acquire the designation in expanded duties in Orthodontics and provides formal advanced education in this area.


Program Overview

The University of British Columbia has been offering the Orthodontic Module since 1979. The program is committed to providing a valuable and successful learning experience. The clinical portion of the course can be challenging, and participants are required to have a minimum of one year of clinical experience in a dental practice. Additionally, participants must have a current active license to practice in British Columbia and good vision (or effective corrective lens) for close work.


Program Requirements

  • Participants must have a minimum of one year of clinical experience in a dental practice.
  • Participants must have a current active license to practice in British Columbia.
  • Participants must have good vision (or effective corrective lens) for close work.
  • Participants will work intraorally on each other and are required to have adequate bandable teeth. If in braces, participants will be required to dewire and debracket some teeth. Or, participants will need to provide a stand-in.

Program Details

  • The program consists of 50 hours of instruction.
  • The program is limited to a certain number of participants.
  • Clinicians are members of the B.C. Society of Orthodontists and Certified Orthodontic Assistants.
  • The program location is the Faculty of Dentistry, The University of British Columbia.

Program Schedule

  • Lectures: May 20-22 (Wednesday to Friday)
  • Clinic, Session A: May 23-27 (Saturday to Wednesday)
  • Clinic, Session B (subject to demand): May 30-June 3 (Saturday to Wednesday)

Program Cost

  • The cost of the program is $1495.00.

Orthodontic Module Update

The Orthodontic Module Update is designed for Certified Dental Assistants and Registered Dental Hygienists who have already completed an accredited Orthodontic Module. This program provides an up-to-date knowledge base and is open to participants regardless of whether they are currently licensed to practice or employed.


Update Program Details

  • The program runs from Wednesday, May 20, to Friday, May 22, inclusive, from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.
  • Participants in the Module Update attend the same lecture sessions as participants in the UBC Orthodontic Module 2020 Licensing Program but do not attend the clinical component of the program.
  • There is no examination or clinical evaluation for participants in the Module Update.
