Program Overview
Introduction to the Rural and Remote Teacher Education Program (RRED)
The University of British Columbia's Rural and Remote Teacher Education Program (RRED) is a two-year hybrid teacher education program designed to address the acute teacher shortage in rural and remote areas. This program blends online coursework and in-person classes, focusing on the elementary and middle years option of the UBC Bachelor of Education (BEd).
Program Overview
- The RRED program allows students to live and work in their rural and remote communities while earning their education degree and certification by the BC Teacher Regulation Branch.
- The program is a high-quality teacher education program that provides an equitable and quality pathway to a BEd degree and teacher certification.
- Students in the program learn while they work in schools throughout the year and, as certified teachers, continue to serve in their rural communities.
Program Structure
- The program consists of 60 total program credits, with 16 in-person courses (36 credits) and 9 online courses (24 credits).
- All practica are completed in person and supervised by certified teachers in rural and remote areas.
- Applications are processed through UBC Vancouver.
Admission Requirements
- To be eligible for the BEd degree, individuals must have completed a Bachelor's degree, including relevant academic preparation for elementary and middle years teacher education.
- Volunteer or work experience in a group setting with children or youth, preferably in elementary or middle years, is also required.
