UBC Leader as Coach – Fundamentals
Overview
This course is part of the UBC Leader as Coach ICF Level 1 Program. It aims to expand leadership range by integrating lived experience with a coaching approach and skillset, promoting development, performance, autonomy, and resilience for leaders and those they engage with.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Distinguish between coaching and other forms of helping such as consulting, advising, and mentoring
- Discern and choose when coaching is (and is not) appropriate as a learning modality in a given situation
- Work with awareness of personal identity, biases, status, and power dynamics as they relate to co-creating psychologically safe conditions and the coach's presence
- Navigate and lead the process of a coaching conversation, in context
- Articulate how to prepare, take action on, and reflect upon elements of a coaching conversation
- Employ a systemic lens to toggle between execution and operational vs. strategic and relational perspectives
- Identify areas of strength and development with respect to personal coaching skills and leadership presence
- Use reflective practice to inform ongoing development as a leader and coach

- Duration: Twelve weeks of course engagement, comprised of six integrated two-week sections

The course includes:
- Coach Approach and Co-Creating the Conditions for Coaching (3 hours)
- COEC: Connect (3 hours)
- COEC: Open (3 hours)
- COEC: Explore (3 hours)
- COEC: Close (3 hours)
- Coach Approach Labs (3 hours)
Assessment
Participants are assessed throughout the course according to University of British Columbia grading practices to ensure successful acquisition of required skills, concepts, and the ICF Core Competencies.
Technology Requirements
To take this course, participants need access to:
- An email account
- A computer, laptop, or tablet under five years old using Windows or macOS with access to a video camera and microphone
- The latest version of a web browser (or previous major version release)
- A reliable internet connection
Requisites
No pre-requisite courses are required.
Expected Effort
To be successful in this course, participants should plan for a minimum of 4 hours every 2 weeks for twelve weeks, participating actively in:
- Pre-course orientation (~30 min)
- Synchronous live learning sessions (~2 hours)
- Asynchronous modular learning (~1 hour)
- Ongoing practice (~unlimited) and reflection (~30 min)
