Program Overview


Master of Education in Indigenous Education

The Master of Education in Indigenous Education is a multidisciplinary program offered by the Faculty of Education, in collaboration with the Office of Indigenous Education and other departments. This program aims to equip educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond to Indigenous Education initiatives across the province of British Columbia.

The program focuses on Indigenous education policy, curriculum, and community relationships. It is designed to enhance support for Indigenous students and families, improve educational outcomes for Indigenous learners, and provide critical Indigenous educational experiences for all students.

Program Objectives

The program objectives include:


  • Deepening understanding of Indigenous knowledges, histories, and worldviews in both theory and practice
  • Strengthening instruction and leadership skills in using and supporting Indigenous education knowledge, practices, and pedagogies
  • Analyzing and adapting existing curriculum frameworks to make them more culturally responsive to Indigenous worldviews and knowledge systems
  • Providing leadership in the development and revision of Indigenous educational policy, curricula, and programming
  • Developing knowledge and practices for engagement with Indigenous learners, people, and communities that advance TRC and UNDRIP commitments

Proposed Schedule

The UBC MEd in Indigenous Education consists of 30 credits of coursework, typically completed in 2.5 years. The program is offered in a blended delivery format, with fall and winter courses online and summer courses in 1-week intensives.


Application Requirements

All students must meet the admission and application requirements of both the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the program, which include:


  • A minimum of two years of engagement within schools, communities, business, government, non-governmental organizations, or other education-oriented environments
  • A completed four-year undergraduate degree and at least a 76% average on all senior-level credits
  • Three letters of recommendation from educators, supervisors, colleagues, or clients that speak to your abilities to complete a graduate degree and interest in Indigenous Education
  • Resume and a 600-word statement of intent of your Indigenous Education experience, professional goals, and the anticipated benefit of involvement in the program

Tuition Fees

  • Domestic: $2,435.86 CAD per installment, totaling $17,051.02 CAD
  • International: $2,871.79 CAD per installment, totaling $20,102.53 CAD

Student Fees

Student fees include fees established and authorized by the UBC Board of Governors and fees established and authorized by student societies. These fees are in addition to tuition fees.


Funding Eligibility

As this program is part-time, it is not eligible for student loans or other types of funding.
