Program Overview
The Institut de français, UBC à Québec is a three-week immersion program designed for French language teachers, both experienced and those entering the profession. The program welcomes all levels of French speakers, from emerging to advanced, and is intended for K-12 teachers and administrators interested in developing their knowledge and teaching of French language and culture within a francophone setting.
Program Details
- The program includes morning classes, additional afternoon workshops, and cultural activities aimed at developing teachers' ability to use French in professional settings.
- Communicative-based methods and differentiated instruction are used to encourage active student participation.
- Participants are expected to arrive the day prior to the first day of the program and attend the Welcome event at the Résidences de l’Université du Québec.

Program Structure
- The program is delivered entirely in French, and participants are encouraged to interact with others during daily activities inside and outside of class.
- Instructors are experienced language educators who support and interact with participants both inside and outside of class time.
Location
- The Institut is located in the quartier St-Roch, within easy walking distance of all Quebec City attractions.
Schedule
- Participants should arrive the day prior to the first day of the program and are expected to attend the Welcome event at the Résidences de l’Université du Québec.
- A sample itinerary from summer 2024 is available, indicating the day-to-day activities during the program.
Travel and Accommodation
Accommodation
- Summer 2026 accommodations will be single occupancy in four-bedroom apartments at the Résidences de l’Université du Québec.
- Spouses and children cannot be accommodated during the program but are welcome to join participants before or after the program in shared accommodation.
Meals
- Lunches and morning snacks are provided on weekdays, while breakfasts and dinners are the participants' responsibility.
Travel and Transportation
- Participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation to Quebec and to the Résidences upon arrival.

Bursary
- British Columbia (BC) certified teachers and BC teacher candidates are eligible to receive a Canadian Heritage bursary to help subsidize the cost of the program.
- Bursaries are administered by the University of British Columbia, and application for the program is also an application for the bursary.
Application
- Applications for Summer 2026 will open in late Fall.
- Participants must first apply and be accepted to the Institute to be eligible for registration.
- Registration and payment of fees will take place in Spring 2026.
Cancellations and Refunds
- BC teachers who are accepted into the program but do not complete it are ineligible for the Canadian Heritage bursary and will be responsible for payment of the full cost of the program.
- Cancellations received on or before May 1, 2026, are eligible for a full refund, less the non-refundable $500 registration fee.
- There is no refund available for cancellations received after May 1st.

- Be located in Quebec, within a 30-minute bus ride from the UQ/TÉLUQ.
- Have a good command of the French language.
- Commit to providing a supportive environment, exclusively in French, and to helping their guests gain confidence in practicing French.
- Provide a fully furnished room for the participant.
- Spend time with the participant and involve them in daily family activities.
- Host families will receive a stipend of $1000 for three weeks.
