Introduction to the Transplantation Immunology (HLA) Fellowship

The University of Chicago Department of Pathology offers a fellowship in Transplantation Immunobiology starting July 1st in the laboratory of Yanping Huang, MD, PhD, F(ACHI). This fellowship position is designed for individuals to participate in training and research in Transplantation Immunobiology and Immunogenetics for two years, with the possibility of extension up to four years.

Program Overview

The Transplant Immunology and Immunogenetics Laboratory reviews over 8,800 full range adult and pediatric solid organ and stem cell transplant, blood bank, and HLA associated disease cases per year. Under the supervision of Dr. Huang, the Transplant Immunology Program Director, Dr. Ruirui Ji, and the management team, the Fellow will participate in HLA clinical testing, review of testing reports, and consultation of clinical cases. Additionally, the Fellow will perform research in collaboration with Dr. Huang and research scientists.

Essential Functions

• CLINICAL (50%): Analyzes in-house and external reports and consultation cases; collaborates with clinical transplant programs and other programs, including weekly clinical Pathology conferences to discuss complex cases.
• RESEARCH (40%): Participates in and manages research project studying Transplantation Immunobiology and Immunogenetics. Engages in translational and basic science research, presents findings at national meetings, and publishes work in well-recognized scientific journals.
• TEACHING (10%): Coordinates residents and fellows rotations. Prepares and presents cases and findings at several departmental and multidisciplinary conferences.

Requirements

The position is intended for exceptional candidates with a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in biological sciences, who have excellent graduate training and a record of publications in immunology, molecular biology, HLA, and immunobiology. Technical experience in antibody testing, flow cytometry, cellular immunology, functional assays, molecular genetics, molecular immunology, and next-generation sequencing is highly desirable. Applicants may come from M.D. with residency in Pathology or Ph.D. in a biological science or related discipline. Pathology resident applicants should have completed either a combined AP/CP residency or a CP residency. The applicant must be able to travel to Chicago for an interview if invited.

Stipend
