Introduction to Teacher Education Programs

The Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs at Simon Fraser University offers various programs for individuals interested in teaching French or teaching in French. These programs cater to different needs and provide opportunities for students to develop their skills and knowledge in the field.


Programs in French

The university offers several programs in French, including:

The Preservice Professional Studies (PPS) offer a unique differentiated or complementary staffing model, combining theory and practice adapted to today's classrooms. Student teachers who successfully complete the programs are recommended to the Teacher Regulation Branch of the BC Ministry of Education for a Teaching Certificate.


Professional Development Program (PDP) - French Module

The PDP - French Module is a 16-month program that combines practical experiences and professional coursework. The program:


  • Starts in September of each year
  • Is delivered in person, full-time, at the SFU Burnaby campus
  • Is taught primarily in French, with some courses and seminars in English
  • Has a tuition fee of approximately $13,000
  • Offers several scholarships for studies in French

Professional Linking Program - French Module

The Professional Linking Program - French Module is designed for paraprofessionals, student support workers, and other professionals. The program:


  • Starts in January of each year
  • Is delivered in-person and online, with a part-time component
  • Is offered at the SFU Surrey and Burnaby campuses
  • Has a tuition fee of approximately $13,000
  • Offers several scholarships for studies in French

Information Sessions

Information sessions are available for individuals interested in the Professional Development Program (PDP) and Professional Linking Program (PLP) - French module. These sessions provide an opportunity to learn more about the programs and the opportunity to become a teacher in a French Immersion, French Language Immersion, or French Language Program in British Columbia.
