Bachelor of Education as a Second Degree
The Bachelor of Education as a Second Degree is a program designed for students who have already completed a Bachelor's degree and wish to pursue a career in teaching. To declare a Bachelor of Education as a second degree, students must possess a Bachelor’s degree, meet SFU’s literacy and quantitative requirements, and have been admitted to one of the following teacher education programs:
- Professional Development Program (PDP)
- Professional Linking Program (PLP)
- Alaska Highway Consortium on Teacher Education (AHCOTE)
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the Bachelor of Education as a Second Degree program, students must meet the following requirements:
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree
- Meet SFU’s literacy and quantitative requirements
- Have been admitted to one of the following teacher education programs:
- Professional Development Program (PDP)
- Professional Linking Program (PLP)
- Alaska Highway Consortium on Teacher Education (AHCOTE)
Teacher Certification Branch Requirements
Students are responsible for ensuring that they meet the Teacher Certification Branch's requirements for a Professional Teaching Certificate.
Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements
If students are admitted to the second degree, they are deemed to have met all of the breadth requirements, the lower-division W of the two required W courses, and one of the two required Q courses. The remaining W and Q courses must be a minimum of 3 units each:
- W course must be upper division and within the major
- Q course may be upper division or lower division
Residency Requirements and Transfer Credits
All courses applied towards the Bachelor of Education 2nd degree must be taken at SFU.
Tuition and Costs
The tuition fees for the Bachelor of Education as a Second Degree program are as follows:
- Domestic Student Tuition (2025/26):
- Normal and Course Challenge: $216.28 (basic - per unit)
- Co-operative Education: $913.80 (per term)
- International Student Tuition (2025/26):
- For students who entered in 2016/2017 or earlier: $1,045.94 (basic - per unit)
- For students who entered in 2017/2018 and 2023/24: $1,191.40
- For students who entered in 2024/25 or later: $1,214.31 (basic - per unit)
- Co-operative Education: $913.80 (per term)
Financial Resources
Undergraduate students may be eligible for scholarships, bursaries, the SFU Work-Study program, and loans.
