MA, MEd in Educational Technology & Learning Design

The MA, MEd in Educational Technology & Learning Design program is designed for students who want to pursue a career in educational technology and learning design. This program provides students with the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to design and implement effective learning technologies.


Program Overview

  • The program is ideal for working professionals who want to explore careers in schools, universities, corporate training, R&D labs, informal learning environments, and beyond.
  • The program can lead to one of two degrees: Master of Education (MEd) and Master of Arts (MA).
  • Applicants need to indicate which program they are applying to.

Program Structure

  • The program is delivered in a blended format, combining in-person and online activities.
  • The program is designed for working professionals, with in-person classes generally held on Tuesday/Thursday evenings or on weekends.
  • Students can complete the program at an accelerated pace if they do not work full-time.

Intake Schedule

  • The next start term is Fall 2026.

Further Studies

  • Students who complete the MA, MEd in Educational Technology & Learning Design program can pursue further studies in Educational Technology & Learning Design, PhD.

Program Design

  • The program provides students with research-based approaches to designing learning technologies, planning for their use, and evaluating their impact on learning.
  • The program features small classes, project-centered coursework, and opportunities to participate in cutting-edge research projects.

Transfer between MA and MEd Degree

  • Students who want to switch from the MA route to the MEd route must approach their pro-tems or senior supervisors and complete the appropriate forms.
  • Switching from the MEd to the MA degree route is more complex and requires strong writing ability, a clear plan, and committed advisement.

    • EDUC 891-4 Learning Design in Technology-Mediated Environments
    • EDUC 893-4 Organizational and Social Aspects of Learning Technology Design
    • EDUC 864-5 Research Designs in Education
  • MEd students also complete:
    • EDUC 934-4 Learning Design Development Workshop
    • EDUC 935-0 Learning Design Demonstration of Mastery
    • A minimum of 5 units of elective coursework chosen in consultation with their supervisor.
  • MA students also complete:
    • EDUC 866-5 Qualitative Methods in Educational Research
    • EDUC 863-3 Quantitative Methods in Educational Research
    • EDUC 898-18 MA Master's Thesis
