Vocational Rehabilitation and Disability Foundations

Vocational rehabilitation and disability management specialists are in demand more than ever. This course provides a comprehensive overview of the field, including historical context, domains of practice, Canadian disability policies, and current industry trends. You’ll learn about impairments and disabling conditions that may impact one’s capacity to work. You’ll also explore past and present models of disability, the explicit and implicit values of work, the fundamental return-to-work hierarchy, and the means to developing a professional and ethical practice lens.

What you will learn

After completing this course, you’ll be able to do the following:


  • Recognize impairments and disabling conditions that may impact individuals’ ability to work
  • Compare past and present models of disability that impact individuals, their communities, and the formation of social policy and legislation in Canada
  • Analyze the explicit and implicit value of work and the current impact of disability on work in Canada
  • Demonstrate understanding of the domains of practice of vocational rehabilitation and disability management professionals
  • Differentiate stages in the return-to-work (RTW) hierarchy in various vocational scenarios
  • Apply a professional and ethical lens to inclusion and wellness and professional conduct

How you will learn and be evaluated

  • Prepare to spend 6–10 hours per week on coursework
  • Expect reading and other assignments on a weekly basis
  • Plan to access the course at least once every few days to keep up with your work and class discussions
  • Connect with the instructor via email, online posts, and optional live Q&A sessions scheduled by the instructor (summaries/recordings available)

You will be evaluated on:

You will be evaluated on a Pass/Fail basis (minimum average grade of 75% required to pass).
