Creative Technology Micro-Certificate
The Creative Technology micro-certificate is a suite of three dual-studies courses for high school students to explore digital creativity. Students can apply to all or any of the courses, though all three would need to be completed to receive the Creative Technology micro-certificate.
Courses
- Graphic Design
- A project-based course learning the basics of graphic design.
- Students will learn to apply the design process to creating clear and effective visual communication.
- Course credits: PSIT 12A (4 credits), SFU course — IAT 102: Graphic Design (3 SFU units)
- Program length: September 3 to December 3 (2025)
- Lectures will be in-person at SFU Surrey on Wednesdays from 4:30 - 7:30pm
- 48 students
- Game Design & Development
- A course introducing fundamentals of game design and development.
- Students will learn about game mechanics, game design, and fundamentals of programming through practical, hands-on lessons.
- Course credits: PSIT 12A (4 credits), SFU course — IAT 165: Game Design & Development (3 SFU units)
- Program length: January 6 to April 16 (2026)
- Lectures will be in-person at SFU Surrey on Wednesdays from 4:30 - 7:30pm
- 24 students
- Creative Projects
- An introduction to creative project work.
- Students will learn about effective teamwork, communication, and collaboration with the final outcome of developing and creating a larger, collaborative, creative work.
- Course credits: PSIT 12A (4 credits), SFU course — IAT 199: Creative Projects (3 SFU units)
- Program length: May 3 to June 29 (2026)
- Lectures will be in-person at SFU Surrey on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 - 7:30pm
- 24 students
Pre-requisites
- Intended for grade 11 or 12 students.
- Required 'C+' in English Language Arts 10.
- Good attendance and punctuality.
- Registered and currently attending a public school in British Columbia.
- These courses are introductory.
- Students should have a strong desire to learn about the topics covered in class.
- Students should expect to put in time outside of class to learn necessary software and work on projects.
Application Procedure
- All those interested in the courses are required to attend an online information session.
- For students at a partnering school or district:
- Have a discussion with your Career Facilitator, counsellor, and parent/guardian to ensure the course meets your goals.
- Obtain a district academic dual credit course application package from your Career Centre.
- Obtain a reference letter from a teacher, preferably from a related subject area.
- Submit a completed application package with all supporting documents to your Career Facilitator before the specified due date.
- If short-listed, attend an interview with the District Career Coordinator.
- For students not in a partnering school or district:
- Visit the School of Interactive Arts & Technology website to learn more about the program.
- Email the micro-credential lead to indicate your interest in applying and receive further information and support on the course application process.
