Program Overview
Program Overview
The BSc Plantenwetenschappen program is a three-year full-time study that focuses on plant sciences. The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of plant biology, ecology, and related fields.
Program Structure
The program is divided into three years, each with its own unique focus and objectives.
Year 1
In the first year, students are introduced to the field of plant sciences and take courses that provide a foundation in mathematics, cell biology, and ecology. These courses are taken together with students from other programs.
Year 2
The second year focuses on deepening students' knowledge of plant physiology and statistics. Students also make an important choice: their specialization. This specialization determines the areas in which students will delve deeper. Options include Genen en gezondheid (Genes and Health) and Teelt en Ecologie (Cultivation and Ecology). A study advisor helps students make the right choice.
Year 3
At the beginning of the third year, students complete their specialization. Afterward, they have the option to follow a minor, either in the Netherlands or abroad, or start working on their bachelor's thesis. The bachelor's thesis is an individual research project that allows students to demonstrate their skills as plant scientists.
Electives
During the third year, students have the opportunity to broaden or deepen their knowledge through electives. They can choose a standard minor or create their own package of courses. It is also possible to take courses at another university, either in the Netherlands or abroad.
Teaching Methods
The program consists of various teaching methods, including:
- Hoorcolleges: Lectures where a teacher presents the material in a classroom setting.
- Werkcolleges: Workshops where students work on assignments under the supervision of a teacher.
- Practica: Practical sessions in a laboratory setting.
- Zelfstudie: Self-study, which can be scheduled or planned independently.
Study Guidance
Wageningen University & Research places great importance on personal guidance and contact. The number of advisors (teachers, study advisors, and mentors) who help students navigate their studies is larger than at other universities in the Netherlands. This personal touch not only reduces the chance of students dropping out but also increases study pleasure.
