Program Overview
Marine Sciences
The Marine Sciences program is a three-year, English-taught bachelor's degree that focuses on understanding marine systems and their impact on society, nature, and food production. The program is unique in the Netherlands and provides students with a broad education in ecology, food production, and the social aspects of marine systems.
Program Description
The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of marine systems, including the impact of human activities on the ocean and its ecosystems. Students will learn about the ecological, social, and economic aspects of marine systems and how to develop sustainable solutions for the use of the ocean.
Curriculum
The program consists of three years of full-time study, with each year building on the previous one. In the first year, students will learn about marine systems, including the biology, ecology, and physics of the ocean. They will also learn about research methods and how to analyze and interpret data.
In the second year, students will focus on finding solutions to the challenges facing marine systems, including the impact of climate change, overfishing, and pollution. They will learn about food systems, marine economy, and law, and will work on projects to develop sustainable solutions for the use of the ocean.
In the third year, students will have the opportunity to specialize in a particular area of interest, such as marine conservation, sustainable fishing, or coastal management. They will also work on a final project that brings together all the knowledge and skills they have acquired during the program.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the Marine Sciences program, students must have a high school diploma with a focus on natural sciences, such as biology, chemistry, and physics. Students with a different background may also be eligible, but they must demonstrate that they have the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in the program.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Marine Sciences program will have a wide range of career opportunities, including research, policy-making, and management. They will be able to work in government agencies, non-profit organizations, or private companies, and will have the skills and knowledge to develop sustainable solutions for the use of the ocean.
Aansluitende Masters
Many students who graduate from the Marine Sciences program go on to pursue a master's degree. The program provides a solid foundation for further study, and graduates will be well-prepared to pursue a master's degree in a related field, such as marine biology, oceanography, or environmental science.
Research Areas
The Marine Sciences program is focused on the following research areas:
- Marine ecology and conservation
- Sustainable fishing and aquaculture
- Coastal management and policy
- Marine economy and law
- Climate change and oceanography
