Program Overview
Introduction to Medische Natuurwetenschappen
The Medische Natuurwetenschappen program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and applications of medical natural sciences. This program is unique in the Netherlands, as it is taught by faculty members from both the bètafaculteit and the Amsterdam UMC.
Program Description
The program focuses on the development of innovative technological solutions for the healthcare sector. Students will learn to apply their knowledge of physics, chemistry, mathematics, and computer science to medical problems, with the goal of improving patient care and treatment outcomes. The program is divided into three years, each with a distinct focus.
First Year
In the first year, students will acquire a broad foundation in the natural sciences, including physics, chemistry, mathematics, and computer science, all within a medical context. They will participate in experiments, learn the steps of scientific research, and develop essential skills such as programming and data analysis. The year concludes with the "Zenuwwerk" project, where students apply their knowledge to the study of the nervous system.

Second Year
In the second year, students will deepen their understanding of the natural sciences and their applications in medicine. They will study subjects such as medical pathophysiology, statistics, optics, and optical observation. The year culminates in a project on cancer, providing insights into its origins, diagnosis, and treatment.

Third Year
In the third year, students have the opportunity to tailor their program to their interests. They can choose from various electives, such as a minor in Biomedical Imaging, and prepare for their master's program. The year concludes with a bachelor's project and the writing of a bachelor's thesis. Students can also choose to work on a project with one of the research groups at the VU or VUmc, gaining experience in how fundamental science is translated into new clinical applications.

Career Prospects
Graduates of the Medische Natuurwetenschappen program have a wide range of career opportunities. They can work as assistant researchers at universities or medical centers, as clinical physicists or chemists in hospitals, or in the medical-technological industry. Many students choose to pursue a master's degree after completing their bachelor's program.
Conclusion
The Medische Natuurwetenschappen program at the VU offers students a unique and comprehensive education in the medical natural sciences, preparing them for exciting careers in healthcare and research. With its strong focus on innovation and application, this program equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make a meaningful contribution to the future of healthcare.
