Program Overview

Program Overview

The Bachelor's program in Chemistry is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of chemical principles and methods. The program is structured to allow students to discover their area of interest within chemistry and specialize in it.

Program Structure

The program consists of three years, with each year divided into four periods of eight weeks and two periods of four weeks. Students typically take two or three courses per period, which include lectures, workgroups, and practicals. The program is taught at two locations: the Science Park (UvA) and the Zuidas (VU).

First Year

In the first year, students learn the fundamental principles and skills of chemistry, including laboratory work and synthesis. The year is divided into four directions within chemistry:

  • Synthesis and Sustainability: This direction focuses on the development of new substances with unique properties, such as new medicines, sunscreens, or pesticides. Students learn to make chemical processes more sustainable through catalysis, green synthesis, and the reuse of raw materials.
  • Chemistry of Life: This direction studies the molecules and chemical processes necessary for life on Earth. Students explore the underlying biochemical principles to find solutions to challenges such as environmental pollution, aging, and the emergence of resistant pathogens.
  • Analytics and Photonics: This direction focuses on the composition of complex substances and materials and the interaction of light and matter. Students use the latest techniques, including laser technology, to analyze substances at the molecular and nanoscale level.
  • Quantum and Computing: This direction examines chemical processes at a theoretical and fundamental level, using models, machine learning, and data research to make predictions about molecular systems.

Second Year

In the second year, students deepen their knowledge in two of the four directions. They also reflect on the role and responsibilities of a chemist in society and learn the basics of data analysis and programming.

Third Year

In the third year, students specialize in one direction and can choose to follow a minor at another program or study abroad for half a year. The year concludes with a literature study and a bachelor's project, which includes a three-month research internship that is completed with a graduation report.

Career Prospects

After completing the bachelor's program, students can specialize further by pursuing a master's degree. As a graduated chemist, they can work at organizations such as TNO, RIVM, hospitals, universities, or in the business sector, including companies in the chemical, pharmaceutical, food, and energy industries. They can also pursue a career in scientific research or education.

Conclusion

The Bachelor's program in Chemistry at VU Amsterdam provides a solid foundation for students to explore the world of chemistry, from the synthesis of new materials to the analysis of complex substances. With its comprehensive curriculum and research opportunities, the program prepares students for a wide range of career paths in chemistry and related fields.
