About Program

Program Overview

Geographical Information Sciences (UNIGIS)

The Master's in Geographical Information Sciences (UNIGIS) at VU Amsterdam is designed to boost your GIS career and make your data work for you. After completing the program, you will be able to get much more out of your data, uncover patterns and relationships that you otherwise might not have known were there, and make more targeted moves.

Overview

The program will help you transition from simply managing and absorbing data to being able to master it. You will learn to perform analyses that will lead to targeted and effective reasoning and planning, and you will work with the latest methods, technology, and tools to prepare you for the challenges of today and the opportunities of tomorrow.

Curriculum

As part of the global UNIGIS network, the GIS Master's at VU Amsterdam is one of only two of its kind in all of Europe. Our membership in UNIGIS International offers you the opportunity to take online courses from other UNIGIS universities.

Future

The program will help you become more effective at your tasks, more capable of convincing others of your decisions, and more prepared for future developments in your career.

Geo-ICT Training Center: Advancing your GIS expertise

The Geo-ICT Training Center is a proud partner of the UNIGIS program at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam). Through this collaboration, students can expand their expertise in Geographic Information Science (GIS) after completing their UNIGIS Master's degree.

About Geo-ICT

Located in the Netherlands, the Geo-ICT Training Center offers a range of training programs focused on GIS, GeoAI, and other geo-information applications. These programs are available in four flexible formats:

  • Courses: Delivered in a classroom (or online) setting, these instructor-led courses encourage interactive learning with peers. Course lengths range from 1 to 4 days.
  • Blended Learning: Combining self-study with scheduled interactive sessions, this format allows you to engage with an instructor for guidance and questions.
  • MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses): Self-paced courses that allow you to learn independently without instructor interaction.
  • Online Support: In addition to the main study formats, one-on-one sessions with a specialist are available to address specific questions or challenges.

Post-Master's Opportunities

Upon completing the UNIGIS Master's program, students may pursue advanced courses offered by Geo-ICT to further their GIS knowledge and practical skills, ensuring they remain at the cutting edge of the field.

Traineeship Opportunities

Graduates also have the chance to undertake fully paid traineeships, which include job-specific training and immediate placement with a client in roles such as:

  • CAD Engineer
  • Data Analyst, Data Scientist, or Data Engineer
  • GIS Specialist
  • Fiber Optic Network Engineer
  • And many more exciting career paths within Geographical Information Science!

What can you do after your Master's degree?

  • Start working: Whatever field or sector you work in, the skills you learn during the program will help you become a more valuable member of your professional community.
  • If you want to work as a Data Management or Information Specialist, and you've mastered the basics, you can spend more time developing and expanding your skills in this rapidly evolving field.
  • If your role is on the side of analysis or consultancy, you will broaden your skills and develop a few new ones. You'll help teams develop innovative answers to the challenges organizations face, today and in the future.
