Master Leraar VHO in de Mens- en Maatschappijwetenschappen
The Master Leraar VHO in de Mens- en Maatschappijwetenschappen is a program designed for individuals who wish to become teachers in the field of social sciences and humanities. The program is offered by the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies to become effective teachers in the Dutch education system.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the program, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a WO-master diploma (or doctoraaldiploma)
- Have acquired sufficient subject-specific knowledge within the total study program (including bachelor's degree), in accordance with the national subject-specific admission criteria
- Meet specific admission requirements for each school subject, which are outlined below
Specific Admission Requirements per School Subject
The program offers various school subjects, each with its own specific admission requirements. These include:
- Aardrijkskunde (Geography): Directly admissible with a university bachelor's degree in Physical or Social Geography and a university master's degree, provided that a minimum of 18 EC in Social Geography and 18 EC in Physical Geography have been completed
- Algemene economie (General Economics): Directly admissible with a university bachelor's degree in General Economics and a university master's degree
- Bedrijfseconomie (Business Economics): Directly admissible with a university bachelor's degree in Business Economics and a university master's degree
- Geschiedenis (History): Directly admissible with a university bachelor's degree in History and a university master's degree
- Godsdienst en Levensbeschouwing (Religion and Philosophy): Directly admissible with a university bachelor's degree in Theology or Religious Studies and a university master's degree
- Maatschappijleer en Maatschappijwetenschappen (Social Studies and Social Sciences): Directly admissible with a university bachelor's degree in Political Science, Sociology, General Social Sciences, or Public Administration and a university master's degree
Vrijstelling (Exemptions)
It is possible to receive exemptions for certain parts of the program based on previously acquired competencies. Students who have already obtained a teaching degree in a different subject area may be eligible for exemptions.
Aanmelden (Registration)
Before registering, students are advised to carefully read the entire registration procedure. Registration for the premaster program takes place through Studielink.
Kosten en studiefinanciering (Costs and Student Finance)
The costs for the Master Leraar VHO are usually equal to the institutional tuition fees. Students who meet the relevant regulations are eligible for student finance. There are various financial compensation schemes for teachers, such as the subsidy for a second teaching degree.
Startdagen (Start Dates)
The Master Leraar VHO starts twice a year: in September (deadline for registration: May 1) and in February (deadline for registration: November 1).
Opleidingsroutes (Training Routes)
The program offers various training routes, including:
- Regulier (Regular): The complete program of 60 EC
- Instroom (Entry): For students who already have a teaching degree in a different subject area and are eligible for exemptions
- Zij-instroom (Side Entry): For students who are already working as teachers and wish to obtain a first-degree teaching qualification
VU Matching
The VU Matching program is designed to help students make an informed decision about their study choice. The program includes a matching process, which is mandatory for students who do not have experience in teaching in the upper secondary education sector.
Voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten (Information Sessions)
The university offers information sessions for prospective students. These sessions provide an opportunity to learn more about the program and ask questions.
