Program Overview

The Deeltijd Master Accounting and Control program at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is designed to prepare students for a career as a preparer, user, or auditor of financial and non-financial information. The program focuses on advanced academic-level analysis of complex issues in accounting and control, taking into account developments in IT, technical aspects of accounting and control, recent academic research, and environmental factors.


Program Structure

The program consists of:


  • Five compulsory courses:
    • Accounting, Control and Society: an introductory course that helps students understand how different aspects of the field are interconnected.
    • Corporate Reporting: focuses on the preparation of financial statements and understanding the problems that reporting standards attempt to solve.
    • Data Analytics for Accounting and Control: explores how information technology is changing the world of accounting and develops practical skills in data analysis.
    • Management Control: examines how performance information is used in managing organizations.
    • Governance, Regulation and Compliance: navigates the complex context of regulation around accounting and control.
  • At least two elective courses, such as:
    • Advanced Auditing: analyzes critical issues in audit practice using a rich toolkit of theoretical insights.
    • Advanced Management Accounting: delves deeper into the role of data analytics in supporting management decisions.
  • A master's thesis and a portfolio of assignments focused on developing professional skills.

Program Details

  • The program is offered part-time, with all course materials in English, requiring a good passive command of the English language.
  • For the full-time variant, a good oral and written proficiency in English is also necessary.
  • In the part-time program, the language of instruction during lectures is usually Dutch, but international lecturers may be involved.
