Program Overview

Introduction to Hispanic Studies

The University of Barcelona's Hispanic Studies program offers a comprehensive education in Spanish language and culture. With over sixty years of experience, the institution has established itself as a leading provider of language and culture courses for international students.

Course Overview

The semester-long Spanish language course is designed to adapt to the levels outlined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). The program is based on the Cervantes Institute Curricular Plan (PCIC) and focuses on grammar, language practice, and communicative skills.

Course Structure

  • The course is 110 hours long and provides 14 ECTS credits.
  • Classes are held four times a week, with two time slots available: 09:00-11:00 and 11:30-13:30.
  • The course is divided into five language levels, with students placed in groups based on their starting point and progress.

Levels and Credits

  • The program offers five language levels: A1, A2.1, A2.2, B1.1, B1.2, B2.1, B2.2, C1.1, C1.2, and C2.
  • Each level is further divided to accommodate students' progress and starting points.
  • The course provides European Union university accreditation based on the European Credits Transfer System (ECTS).

Assessment and Attendance

  • The course is assessed through a combination of class work (20%) and a final examination (80%).
  • Students must attend at least 80% of classes to meet the attendance requirement.
  • Failure to meet the attendance requirement may result in a loss of up to 10% of the final grade.

Grades and Workload

  • The marking system ranges from 0 to 10 points, with grades categorized as Excellent (9-10), Good (7-8.9), Pass (5-6.9), and Fail (0-4.9).
  • Students are expected to dedicate a significant amount of time to individual study and participate actively in classes.

Complementary Activities

  • Throughout the course, Hispanic Studies organizes complementary activities to enhance knowledge of Spanish language and culture.
  • These activities provide students with a deeper understanding of the linguistic and cultural environment of Catalonia and the countries of participating students.
