Program Overview

Master of Science in Product Management

The Master of Science in Product Management (MSPM) is a one-year interdisciplinary program offered jointly by the Tepper School of Business and the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. This program combines business, technology, design, and leadership skills to equip students with the technical, leadership, and business skills needed to drive product innovation and advance their careers as product managers.

Program Description

The MSPM program provides students with hands-on experience, an internship, and a capstone project. Graduates often cite the integration of design and user experience as uniquely valuable takeaways of the program. The program is more in-depth than certificate programs and specifically focused in contrast with other degree programs.

Education and Experience

The MSPM curriculum combines business, technology, and design with practical experience. Students study core concepts and apply them through projects, internships, and team-based learning. The result is a degree built around the skills employers look for when hiring product managers.

  • Business fundamentals for product managers: Understand markets, strategy, and finance to make informed decisions.
  • Team management and communication: Learn to lead cross-functional teams and build alignment across business and technical groups.
  • Technology and artificial intelligence: See how data and new tools shape products and business models.
  • Human-centered design: Use HCI and UX/UI methods to design products that meet real user needs.

Career Support

The Masters Career Center (MCC) provides guidance, coaching, and resources to help students plan their product management careers. The MCC offers:

  • Building a tailored career plan that reflects strengths, goals, and vision for success in product management.
  • Identifying target employers and industries where skills and leadership potential are in demand.
  • Refining resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles to showcase ability to lead products from concept to launch.
  • Preparing for interviews, case exercises, and networking with the confidence to articulate value as a future product manager.
  • Using market insights to stay informed on industry trends and employer expectations.
  • Leveraging Tepper School alumni and recruiter connections to create meaningful opportunities in product management and beyond.
