Program Overview


Introduction to the Bachelor of Humanities and Arts (BHA) Program

The Bachelor of Humanities and Arts (BHA) is an intercollege degree that combines the strengths of the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences (DC) and the College of Fine Arts (CFA). This program allows students to combine their CFA concentration with a concentration in one of the subject areas offered by Dietrich College.


Program Requirements

The BHA program requires a total of 378 units, distributed as follows:


  • BHA General Education: 126 units
  • DC Concentration: 81-107 units
  • CFA Concentration: 108-144 units
  • Free Electives: 1-63 units

BHA General Education

The BHA General Education curriculum is a modified version of the DC General Education program. In addition, students are required to fulfill BXA-specific courses.


DC Concentration

Students choose their humanities or social/behavioral sciences concentration from any subject area offered in the following DC departments:


  • Economics
  • English
  • History
  • Institute for Politics and Strategy
  • Interdepartmental Studies
  • Modern Languages
  • Philosophy
  • Psychology
  • Social and Decision Sciences
  • Statistics The BHA DC Concentration Declaration Form must be submitted by spring mid-semester break of the sophomore year.

CFA Concentration

Students choose their fine arts concentration from among the following schools in CFA:


  • Architecture
  • Art
  • Design
  • Drama
  • Music A student must meet entry requirements for the specific CFA school of their choice.

Free Electives

Students can take any Carnegie Mellon course. Many students use their electives to broaden or deepen their concentrations. A maximum of 9 units of physical education and/or military science may be counted toward this requirement.
