Introduction to the PhD Program at the UvA

What does a PhD Track Look Like?

As a PhD candidate, you will independently conduct scientific research under the guidance of experienced researchers. You will present the results of your research in a dissertation, which you will publicly defend before a promotion committee. Additionally, you may have teaching responsibilities. A full-time PhD track lasts a maximum of four years, but part-time options are also available.

The majority of PhD graduates ultimately work outside the university. During your PhD track, the UvA offers various forms of career guidance, such as workshops and training.

Grants and Subsidies

As a PhD candidate at the UvA, you can apply for additional grants for activities like fieldwork abroad. At the end of your PhD track, it is also possible to apply for funding to continue your scientific career. There are many funding opportunities available.
