Introduction to the PhD Program at the UvA

The UvA offers a stimulating research environment where PhD candidates can fully develop their talents. Our scientific research is internationally top-ranked in many fields, and UvA researchers regularly receive substantial grants and prestigious awards.

What does a PhD Track Look Like?

As a PhD candidate, you will independently conduct scientific research under the guidance of experienced researchers. You will present the results of your research in a dissertation, which you will publicly defend before a promotion committee. Additionally, you may have teaching responsibilities. A full-time PhD track lasts a maximum of four years, but part-time options are also available.

Why Pursue a PhD at the UvA?

Stimulating Research Environment

The UvA consists of independent thinkers who dare to ask questions and openly disagree. The university is characterized by a critical, creative, and international climate, and an open atmosphere. The UvA shows a strong commitment to the city and society, where scientific research and societal issues reinforce each other.

Network within Europe

As a large, research-intensive university, the UvA collaborates closely with other universities both domestically and internationally. By utilizing each other’s data, knowledge, and infrastructure, the quality and international significance of the research increase. The UvA is part of renowned European and global networks of collaborating universities, such as LERU, Universitas21, and EPICUR.

Future Prospects

After your PhD, you can pursue a career in academia as a lecturer/researcher, or you can choose to work in the private sector and public sector, where your expertise will be highly valuable. The majority of PhD graduates ultimately work outside the university. During your PhD track, the UvA offers various forms of career guidance, such as workshops and training.

Grants and Subsidies

As a PhD candidate at the UvA, you can apply for additional grants for activities like fieldwork abroad. At the end of your PhD track, it is also possible to apply for funding to continue your scientific career. There are many funding opportunities available.
