Program Overview
PhD Programme
The Research Institute of Child Development and Education (RICDE) offers a PhD programme for candidates who have obtained a master's degree or a research master's degree. The primary task of a PhD candidate is to conduct research and write a dissertation.
Programme Overview
The RICDE and the Graduate School of Child Development and Education (GSCDE) collaborate to train research master students and PhD candidates to become competent and self-reliant researchers. PhD candidates are supervised by at least two experienced researchers, including a full professor who acts as promotor and a daily supervisor who may also act as co-promotor.
Training and Supervision Plan
At the start of a PhD project, candidates submit a project description and planning (PhD monitoring form) and create a training plan. The training plan outlines:
- General skills the candidate needs to develop
- The national research school they will join
- Courses, conferences, or workshops they will attend
- The size of the PhD training programme (in EC) The education and supervision plan must be approved by the Graduate Studies Committee and the national research school.
Monitoring Progress
In the first year, a formal evaluation takes place between 9 and 12 months. The PhD candidate updates their progress report, and the promotor writes a letter addressing the candidate's:
- Quality of written work
- Independence
- Knowledge and skills
- Academic attitude
- English proficiency The decision to continue or end the project is made within the first 12 months based on these criteria. Subsequent years involve annual performance interviews and progress reports.
Guidance to the Job Market
PhD candidates with academic perspectives are encouraged to build a network in academia. They are also encouraged to start building a teaching portfolio during their PhD project, as a University Teaching Qualification (BKO) is compulsory for teaching in higher education. Candidates who may not stay in academia are encouraged to make contacts with research or professional organizations within the Netherlands.
Confidential Adviser
The confidential adviser for PhD candidates is Drs. Mariëlle de Reuver.
